Wheelchair access at Disney and IOA

Have been before but this the first time with a wheelchair. Am aware that access is going to be good at the parks but i was just wondering about the monorail? Just push him on? He cannot transfer. Dont think he would want to go on the rides as such but would want to watch the shows. Is there a guest assistance pass at both these parks and if so how do you get them? also are there designated parking spaces ? do you have to take proof that a person is disabled ? any advice welcomed as like to have an idea what we may encounter beforehand.

Are you bringing a wheelchair with you? Renting a car? I%26#39;m going on these assumptions...

We took my grandmother with us once. She can walk only short distances and certainly not throughout the parks. I%26#39;m not sure how you would be able to obtain a temporary disabled parking hang tag as you%26#39;re from the UK, and it would have to be one that would be valid here. But there is disabled parking available. You do need to have at least the hang tag to designate as such.

If the person you%26#39;re with is already in the wheelchair, you probably do not need to have any kind of proof that he is disabled. In Disney (we didn%26#39;t take my Grandma to IOA) you can head to Guest Relations and they can give you the information you need for each park. As for the monorail, the cast members will help you push him on. They have a ramp, so he will not need to transfer. Most rides that he%26#39;ll be able to do (obviously not roller coasters) have certain ride vehicles that they%26#39;ll be able to roll the wheelchair right on so he will not need to transfer. The people at guest relations can tell you which rides these are.

Let me know if you have any more general questions and hopefully I can help a bit more!

Wheelchair access at Disney and IOA

hi,

we were told before we left the uk that our blue badge would not be accepted in the usa so we didnt take it. We were told that we would have to get one locally from the government offices and that we would have to pay for i t. However when we were walking through the disabled area of the car park in disney we did notice that people had the badges up. So it is worth a try, Im going to take ours next time. Its not free parking just nearer but since we were arriving early everyday anyway it didnt matter that much to us as were normally in the first few rows of the car park anyway.

Get a pass from guest relations in Disney. Dont know about US as we never went.

Perhaps Disney %26amp; IOA do recognize the international handicap hang tags. I don%26#39;t know about the rest of FL, but they probably get enough international visitors that it would be ok... Just a thought. Hopefully there are some more people here with experience on it :)

Thanks Kat. I didnt know that you could just put the wheelchair on the rides. Thats amazing! The only reason I ask about the parking is that we need space at the side of the car for the chair. In england we use a hoist but I can actually lift him in and out for the holiday but still need a bit of space.

Not on all the rides, but off the top of my head, I can think of a few...I know Small World, the Finding Nemo Ride, and Journey Into Your Imagination all have special vehicles for wheelchairs. I%26#39;m sure there are more rides that do this, but those are three that I can think of off the top of my head :)

Thanks travelbug. Will take it with us just in case. What does the guest pass entitle us to?

Jungle Safari boats have at least one boat that is set up for wheelchairs. I think E.T. did also. The monorail or the boat over to MK shouldn%26#39;t be a problem .

On the rides that you can take the wheelchair on that you%26#39;ll need to board specially, usually you%26#39;ll need to go through the exit line. Sometimes there will be a member of your party that needs to stay in the regular line and then when you reach the front, they%26#39;ll have the rest of your party join you. On a lot of the rides they%26#39;ve refurbished them so that the lines are wide enough for wheelchairs, so you may go through the regular line until a certain point. Guest Services will be able to walk you through this as it may be different for you as it was for us since we could transfer my Grandma (though slowly!)
