Just returned from this years trip- water spout and subsequent power outage was certainly an interesting sidebar- couple of quick observations:
Kudos to any and all involved in the lighthouse project. Very well done.
Seems my favorite island breakfast place the Banana Starfish Cafe aka The Surf Dog has closed, is being renovated and will be turned into a bar. Wasn%26#39;t able to confirm the bar part from a reliable source. SGI- heard anything on this one?
Bait shops have quit selling fishing licenses but will provide you with a number to call to get an instant confirmation number. If you have the time get one online or call ahead so you%26#39;ll have one beforehand. Surf and bridge fishing was decent considering the weather.
Had a moment of panic in Apalach when I came around the back way to Tamara%26#39;s and it was gone!!! I hadn%26#39;t known they relocated on Market in a more desirable location for them.
Just another flat out great trip. Time to start scoping dates for next year.
Starfish cafe
I have not heard that, I will be back on the island hopefully this weekend for a few days, I%26#39;ll see what I can find out.
I did not know that the SGI Trading Company store was almost built out, I thought there still were some issues that had to be clarified, but in looking at recent pics that I saw, it looks like it will compete with the unusualness of another pretty tall building on the other main corner. I%26#39;ll be interested to see what it looks like in person. I am hoping that the middle of the island does not become to packed in with traffic.
Probably the bait shops were not able to make anything on the licences, and they decided they would not sell, and somewhat rightfully so, the state is killing folks on the pricing of fishing licences, both for saltwater and freshwater, and both for residents and nonresidents, but way more so for nonresidents. Just my opinion.
Actually, I was somewhat surprised with the quick responce on the water spout and power issue on the island, but then again, if you go to SGI for the right reasons, having no power would not be a big issue, you just got to wing it. Alot of us have become spoiled with the big city life amenities, and when we are hit without them, we panic and can%26#39;t do without it.
How was ';Paradise Found'; this year? You got any fishing tips %26amp; tricks and/or spots that you can share? I know I get alot of questions on fishing, and that is totally not my cup of tea, but I give it a try every now and then.
Yea, I had heard that Tamara%26#39;s I think had moved into the old Prudential Office spot on the lower floor earlier in the year.
Glad you had a great trip !!!!!!

I don%26#39;t think the SGI Trading Co- if thats the building getting ready to go up to the east on the main corner is making much progress. Just slabbed and stubbed when we were there and no one was around all week and it looked like the equipment hadn%26#39;t been moved in awhile.
Sidebar- have they actually sold any of those condo units on the west side of the main corner? They still looked pretty deserted and I think they were just finishing them up last year when we were down. Maybe not selling so hot?
I was well pleased with the quick response on the power issues as well. Wasn%26#39;t much of an inconvenience at all. Talked to a lady who said the same thing happened about 16 years ago and it took several days for power to be restored. It was also pretty cool watching the guys work off the barge and from the boats in the bay while fishing from the bridge.
I usually confine my fishing to the bridge and the surf and had decent luck at both places with a nice black tip shark being the main prize this trip. Usually opt for cut bait but you cant go wrong with squid or shrimp either.
Paradise Found was fine. It seems to be a slightly older house with the usual minor issues but its tastefully decorated and was just the right size for us this year. And I really like the neighborhood. Top Gun definitely wins the curb appeal award.
Talking about fishing licenses, I had read that on some bridges and piers you don%26#39;t need a license. Is that true for the old bridge that use to link SGI and Applach. How about the main pier on SGI and the surf?
I believe that I would have one for everywhere, FWC is just looking for ways to make money in this down economy. I heard that FWC was out in force during the summer, especially with people on the bridge. No need for them to stop now when looking for any ways to collect another buck.
I know you need one for the surf and off shore unless your on a charter and I%26#39;m pretty sure the bridge doesn%26#39;t fall under the public umbrella section. I%26#39;ve never been asked by the FWC to see mine but I would hate to take the chance. My 7 day non-resident license wound up costing $34.08. The $4.08 was a ';convenience'; processing fee for using my credit card over the phone.
I would much rather see this fee go to the local bait shops on the island to help them out and make it worth their time.
