Drove to Destin from Dallas late July and had trouble deciding on which route to take...LA or MS. So we decided to go through LA. I definately recommend going this route because there are a lot of places to stop and the drive goes by relatively fast once you get out of Texas. We made it from Dallas to Gulfport, MS in 9 hours and that is with stopping along the way. Then it was only a couple of hours to Destin from Gulfport. Some advice:
1. Once you get on I10 from I49 you will be driving over a swamp for almost 40 miles. It can be a little scarry. I am glad we didn%26#39;t drive it at night. Also, watch Baton Rouge around rush hour....not pretty. We got stuck on a huge bridge in dead lock traffic and I was scared to death. 2. Bring a radar detector. The cops are sneaky...they hide in the trees and they are in unmarked cars. 3. Make sure you fill up in Alexandria (when you first get into town) because it is a long way to Lafayette to get gas. The south part of Alexandria is rough. You will see lot%26#39;s of Texas license plates along this route so it makes you feel at ease and at home. Have a safe journey.
Dallas to Destin Advice. My tip: Do not stop at the Royal Inn in Lafayette! Disgusting!
Dallas to Destin Advice. That is the route we have been taking with the same results. We like staying in Biloxi, so you have the short(er) drive the next day like you said.
Also, that long swamp bridge is ALWAYS teaming with cops when we go too.
Will be leaving Thursday, crossing fingers for no hurricanes!
One more thing to agree with. We cant leave Dallas until after 8am (dog kennel) and always hit the rush hour mess in LA.
