nearest best beach with surfing waves

My son loves to surf in sunny Aberdeen, Scotland, near Chinners greenhouse!

Can anyone recommend a good beach for surfing near Orlando? Ideally we would like to keep the driving time as short as possible but realise it will be 80 miles plus... and we would have to hire boards.

Your best bet will be Cocoa Beach. You can rent surf boards there and a lot of people surf there. :o)

The Atlantic ocean side is definitely better for waves than the gulf side, albeit you have to be on the lookout for sharks.

Daytona, New Smyrna, and possibly Cocoa Beach would be the closest destinations to Orlando for better surfing.

Cocoa Beach is less than an hour away. The Beachline toll road (528) takes you stright there. You can rent boards many places but Ron Jon%26#39;s is most famous.

Have fun!

Melbourne beach also

Just take 192 till you hit water

Depending on how advanced or beginner he is Cocoa Beach is usually a good bet and for about $3 in tolls you can be there in an hour from Orlando. From %26#39;The Streets%26#39; to Cocoa beach pier are pretty soft waves and you can usually find a spot away from swimmers and have fun. if he%26#39;s intermediate to advanced may want to check further south in to Satellite Beach (rock bottoms) to Melbourne. New Smyrna Beach is the most consistent beach in FL and youre pretty much guarenteed you can find a wave. NSB is an hour north of Orlando. Check out Red Dog or Inlet Charley%26#39;s for board rentals.

If you need to rent surfboards check out Cocoa Beach Surf Company (next door to Ron Jons) or Quiet Flight (about 10 minutes south of Ron Jons), sorry, not a fan of Ron Jons.

All board rentals should be under $20 for a full day.

hope that helps some

Joysilvercat,

I agree with the previous posters. Cocoa is your best bet for several reasons not the least of which is the best waves. Melbourne is good for a more experienced surfer and excellent for non-surfing water activities. Cocoa is not as busy as Daytona but has enough surf shops and surfing instructors that if you book in advance you can find someone qualified to teach you what you need to know. It also has the best options other than Daytona for those in the party who would rather see and be seen than risk their necks in the water.

My final reason is a ';soap box'; issue for me. People drive on the beach in Daytona. There is no driving on the beach in Cocoa. In my opinion, alcohol, automobiles and people playing on the beach do not mix. I do not consider the beach at Daytona safe for that reason. I have been there out of season on week days when there are no cars. Daytona is a nice beach when it can be enjoyed safely.

Cocoa and Melbourne are nice beaches all the time.

There is also a store in the Florida Mall that has surf lessions. It%26#39;s pretty neat to watch. But Cocoa Beach is best for waves on the Atlantic Coast. The gulf is very calm.
